Deep Plane Facelift Recovery Week by Week

By · Istanbul recovery guide for international patients

10–12Days in Istanbul minimum
2–3Weeks to social presentability
3Months to see final contours
12–15Years longevity

Recovery from deep plane facelift is more extensive than from less invasive techniques, and that is because the procedure is more anatomically thorough. Releasing the retaining ligaments, repositioning the deeper facial structures, and performing platysmaplasty for neck contouring produces more sustained results — but also requires the tissues more time to heal and settle.

This guide covers the full recovery timeline for patients who have their surgery in Istanbul, including hospital stay, hotel recovery, suture removal, when to fly home, and what to expect in the months that follow. The logistics are as important as the medical timeline for international patients.

I tell every patient the same thing before surgery: your recovery will feel slower than you expect, and your result will be better than you expect. The deep plane technique involves releasing the zygomatic and masseteric ligaments and repositioning the SMAS layer as a composite — this is more tissue work than a standard facelift, and the swelling reflects that. But because there is no skin tension, the healing is clean and the final result is natural. Trust the timeline.

Istanbul recovery logistics

International patients have specific logistical requirements that differ from patients recovering at home. The following applies to patients traveling from the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, or elsewhere.

Hotel

We recommend staying in a hotel within 10–15 minutes of the clinic. Rooms with a refrigerator are useful for cold compresses. Avoid stairs — request a ground or low floor. Your coordinator provides hotel recommendations and assistance booking at rates appropriate for recovery patients.

Transfers

All clinic and hospital transfers are included in your package. VIP transfer on airport arrival, hospital discharge, and all clinic appointments during your Istanbul stay. You should not drive or navigate public transport alone in the first 10 days.

Patient coordinator

Your dedicated patient coordinator arranges all clinic transfers and appointments during your Istanbul stay. Dr. Zereyak's team is contactable by phone and WhatsApp throughout your stay for any concerns.

Flying home

Minimum 10 days before long-haul flights. Wear your compression garment during the flight, hydrate regularly, and walk the aisle every 2 hours. US patients typically fly home at days 12–14. Book a flexible return ticket — do not book a non-refundable flight less than 12 days after surgery.

What to bring to Istanbul for recovery

  • Button-front or zip-front tops — do not pull clothing over your head for 2 weeks
  • Loose, comfortable trousers with elastic waist
  • Soft travel pillow for head elevation
  • Sunglasses — protects eyes from light sensitivity and provides privacy
  • Prescribed medications (we provide these — bring any existing medications)
  • Entertainment for quiet hotel days — books, tablet, headphones
  • Comfortable slip-on shoes — bending forward is uncomfortable early on
  • Travel insurance that covers medical care abroad

What not to do during recovery

  • Do not smoke — increases complication risk and delays healing significantly
  • Do not drink alcohol for minimum 2 weeks
  • Do not apply heat to your face — hot showers, saunas, steam rooms — for 6 weeks
  • Do not sleep face-down for 4–6 weeks
  • Do not wear glasses resting on your nose or ears for 4 weeks
  • Do not expose incision lines to direct sun without SPF 50+ for 12 months
  • Do not assess your results at week 1 — this is not representative

What happens if I have a concern after returning home?

Every patient receives 12 months of remote follow-up as part of their package. This is not a formality — it is an active protocol:

  1. WhatsApp and email access — Dr. Zereyak's team is reachable directly for any post-operative concern, including photographs for assessment.
  2. Scheduled video check-ins — at week 3, month 1, month 3, month 6, and month 12 after surgery. These are included in your package at no additional cost.
  3. Emergency protocol — in the rare event of a complication requiring in-person assessment after you have returned home, Dr. Zereyak's team coordinates with a local board-certified plastic surgeon in your area. We maintain referral contacts in major US and UK cities for this purpose.
  4. Return to Istanbul — if revision or intervention is required and the patient prefers to return, the team arranges logistics and scheduling promptly.

I consider the follow-up period as important as the surgery itself. The majority of post-operative concerns — minor asymmetry questions, numbness duration, scar management — are resolved remotely with photographs and video assessment. In my experience, fewer than 2% of international patients require any in-person follow-up beyond their initial Istanbul stay.

Recovery FAQ

When can I fly home after a deep plane facelift in Turkey?

We recommend remaining in Istanbul for a minimum of 5–7 days post-surgery. This allows for partial suture removal (typically day 5) and a post-operative follow-up before your flight. Most international patients are comfortable flying after 7–10 days. Long-haul flights (over 9 hours) should be discussed individually during consultation.

What is the recovery timeline for a deep plane facelift?

Days 1–3: Significant swelling and bruising, head elevation required, rest at hotel. Day 5: Partial suture removal — dissolvable sutures are used throughout. Week 1–2: Socially presentable, most patients feel confident leaving the hotel. Month 1: Near-normal function, majority of swelling resolved. Month 3: Final facial contours settling. 6–12 months: Complete resolution of all swelling and scar maturation.

Is a deep plane facelift hard to recover from?

Recovery is more extensive than a mini facelift or SMAS facelift due to the deeper tissue plane involved. Most patients describe the first 3–5 days as uncomfortable rather than painful — we prescribe appropriate pain management. Swelling peaks at 48–72 hours then gradually improves. The majority of Dr. Zereyak's international patients feel comfortable flying home at 12–14 days post-surgery.

When can I sleep on my side after a deep plane facelift?

Sleep on your back with head elevated (30–45 degrees) for the first 3–4 weeks. Side sleeping puts pressure on the healing tissues and can affect symmetry during the swelling phase. Most patients can transition to side sleeping at 4–6 weeks, though the exact timeline should be confirmed at your post-operative follow-up.

Can I have a video consultation before traveling to Istanbul?

Yes — we offer free video consultations via Zoom or Microsoft Teams for all international patients. During a 30–45 minute session, Dr. Zereyak reviews your photos, discusses your aesthetic goals, evaluates candidacy, provides a personalized quote, and answers all pre-surgical questions. Most international patients complete 1–2 video consultations before confirming their surgery date.

What does deep plane facelift recovery look like day by day?

Day 1–2: Significant swelling and bruising, head wrapped in compression bandage. Day 3–4: Peak swelling — the face appears much larger than it will. Bruising is deep purple across the lower face and neck. Day 5: Partial suture removal — all sutures are dissolvable. Swelling begins reducing noticeably each day. Bruising transitions from purple to yellow-green. Day 5–7: Most patients feel comfortable flying home. Week 3–4: Socially presentable — residual swelling visible mainly to you, not others. Month 3: First clear view of final contours. Month 6–12: All swelling resolved, scars matured, final result visible.
